Excellent conditions for Sunday Flyers

DESPITE heavy rain falling overnight, the greens in Birkenhead Park were in excellent condition for this week's Flyers.

Gladstone's Mick Andrews has been one of the most consistent winners at these Tournaments for a long time but he has not been at his best so far this year.

This week, however, he put all this behind him in a series of dominant performances to take the first prize; in the final he beat Upton Victory Hall's Tony Cavanagh who was making a rare appearance in the Park.

In the quarter-finals Andrews was far too good for last week's winner West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson and then in the semis he beat two time winner Paul Roberts who plays for the Baileys Hill Club in North Wales.

Cavanagh beat his Upton team mate Bob Hodgson fairly comfortably in the quarters but in the semi final he just scraped through by the closest of margins against Kendall's Colin Portis.

This was Cavanagh's second 21-20 win on his way to the final.

The final was initially very tight with the two players matching each other point to point but then Andrews raised his game and he ran out a 21-15 winner.

Results:

Quarter-finals: C Portis 21, Craig Saville 16; T Cavanagh 21, R Hodgson 11. M Andrews 21, W Atkinson 11; P Roberts 21, N Woodward 15.

Semi-finals: Cavanagh 21, Portis 20. Andrews 21, Roberts 19.

Final: Andrews 21, Cavanagh 15.

Wirral Ladies are holding a Race Night at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre this Thursday, February 23, at 7.30pm. Entrance is £1 and all are welcome.
