THE battle for survival in the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's Division One intensified at the weekend and just four points now separate the bottom eight clubs.

Willaston interrupted Heswall's outside challenge for the title and moved from second to bottom to 12th on the table after efforts from Paul Ellison and Colin Cunliffe secured a priceless 2-1 victory.

Champagne corks also popped at bottom club Blacon YC who celebrated their fourth win of the season and were indebted to goals from Adam Langton, Lee McElmeel and Jamie Rogers for Saturday's 3-1 eclipse of Cammell Laird Reserves who themselves are also now knee-deep in the relegation mire.

Ryan Brown and Kevin Kirkpatrick were the respective marksmen as fellow strugglers Upton AA and Southport Trinity settled for a point apiece.

But it was a profitable run out for reigning champions West Kirby who went fifth on the table after a solitary effort from Adam Lea put paid to faltering second placed challengers Maghull.

Runaway leaders Ashville netted through Dave Rudge but were brought back down to earth with a bump after they went down 2-1 at home to Vauxhall Motors Reserves.

Kynan Mason and Josh Walsh found the net for the Motormen, and it was a bad day for third placed Newton, who capitulated 2-0, to goals from Marine Reserves' Paul Pearson and Brad Foster, as the fifth placed Arriva Stadium Road outfit secured their ninth win of the season.

Dark Horses Runcorn Linnets Reserves maintained interest in the race for promotion from Division Two after they pulled off an excellent 3-0 win at Heswall Reserves, courtesy of goals from Jack Webb, Josh Smith and Lewis Buckley.

Prescot Cables Reserves beat Bronze Social by the same scoreline with Sam Gifford, Ashton Gibiliru and Mike Lacey on the mark, but a goal from Gary Powell failed to prevent Marshalls Reserves from losing 3-1 at Maghull Reserves.

Steve Carroll (2) and Danny Morgan netted for the hosts.

Despite a goal from Jamie McCartney, second-placed Helsby's Division Three title hopes took the knock after they dipped 2-1 at bottom club Hale Reserves who sealed the win with goals from Josh Stead and Ian Stockton.

As a result, third-placed Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves took closer order after they blitzed Capenhurst Villa Reserves 5-0, inspired by a Phil Duncan hat trick.

John McAllister struck twice for Merseyside Police, but still finished on the losing side when Chester Nomads Reserves hit back via Peter Fitzpatrick (2) and Steve Cunningham.

Local rivals Christleton Reserves also had cause for celebration, following a 2-0 result over Belfry, confirmed by efforts from Ronnie Morgan and Nathan Mapletoft.

Elsewhere, Ryan Nicol and Matty Scott left their calling cards, as Ellesmere Port Reserves posted a fine 2-0 result at New Brighton Reserves.

Maghull recaptured pole position in the Youth Division after efforts from Adam Wilkinson (2), Andy McNally and Jordan Lorde sparked them to a 4-1 victory at Runcorn Town.

A smart double from Lee Turkington was supplemented by further goals from Jordan Mason, Alex Howard and Adam Collins, as Runcorn Linnets overcame Pex Hill 5-2.

Ollie Main and Stuart McDonald obliged for the visitors, while a lone strike from Will Myers saw Widnes Town take maximum spoils from their excursion to Hale.

On the District scene, it was commiserations to Hale's senior side, who lost 1-0 to Waterloo Dock in the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup quarter finals.
