Plans to transform a coastal public toilets block into a cafe with a viewing platform have triggered a flush of apprehension among residents of nearby flats.

People living in Hoyle Court in Trinity Road, Hoylake fear that the introduction of a licence to sell alcohol at the cafe in North Parade – an area designated by the local authority as “alcohol free” – could impact on their quality of life.

Alan Peters, treasurer of the Hoyle Court Residents Association said: “People are worried that it could become part of the Hoylake ‘drinking circuit.’ "We already have a problem on the front with people getting drunk, despite it being an alcohol free zone.

“We don’t object to the proposed development - it will certainly be an improvement of the present situation – but the introduction of a licence to sell alcohol has raised serious doubts about the negative impact on our homes.”

Mr Peters, who has lived at Hoyle Court for the last 25 years, said residents of individual flats had been contacted about the planning applications and 13 had registered their opposition online and five had voted in favour.

He said about half of the residents were aged between 40 and 60 and as many did not have access to a computer and had made use of facilities at Hoylake library.

The application will go before Wirral planning authority in the next few weeks.
