A SPECIAL police sergeant who helped run a neighbourhood watch scheme has been nominated for the Wirral Volunteer of the Year Award.

The mum-of-three from Wallasey, who also works full-time at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, is among more than 30 unsung heroes from across the borough whose selfless acts within their communities have earned them a nomination for the Globe-backed award.

And there is still time to recognise the person who you feel is worthy of the accolade.

Now in its 15th year the accolade, which aims to salute those whose voluntary work often goes unnoticed, is organised by Volunteering Wirral.

There are six categories, from which the overall Wirral Volunteer of the Year will be chosen.

They are: 1: Unwaged, 2: Employed (for volunteering in their own time) 3: Younger person (aged 25 and under) 4: Older person (Over 65) 5: Disabled person 6: Specialist category - A group of volunteers who carry out their volunteering as part of a recognised team.

The recipients will be unveiled during a ceremony at the Floral Pavilion Theatre and Conference Centre later in New Brighton on Wednesday, July 14.

Forms are available from libraries across the borough and the Wirral Globe's office in Haymarket Court, Hinson Street, Birkenhead. They are also available online at: www.volunteeringwirral.co.uk

Send your completed form to: Volunteer Centre Wirral, 46 Hamilton Square, Birkenhead CH41 5AR. The deadline is Friday, May 21.
